Oregano Oil Infusion
Ingredients
  • 1 1/4cups dried oregano leavesextremely dry
  • 2cups Oilolive, almond or grapeseed oil
  • 1 one-pint jar with lid and band
Instructions
  1. Wash and sterilize the jar, lid and band.
  2. In a medium saucepan bring 2 quarts of water to a boil. After reaching a rolling boil, turn off the heat but leave the pot on the element.
  3. Pack the sterilized jar with the oregano then fill with your choice of oil, leaving 1/2″ headspace.
  4. Seal with the lid and band then place the jar in the hot water and let stand for 10 minutes to help the oregano release its oil.
  5. Remove from the water, wipe dry and place in a sunny windowsill for two weeks. Gently turn and shake the jar every couple of days.
  6. After two weeks, strain the oil from the leaves and pour into a clean jar with a tight fitting lid. Store in cool, dark cupboard.
Recipe Notes

To help preserve the oregano oil, a few drops of grapefruit seed oil added after straining is beneficial.

Make sure that the oregano is extremely dry – you don’t want any water left in leaves as all as that leaves room for botulism if spores are present. Consider running the leaves through a cycle on a food dehydrator if you have one.
